PTE vs IELTS: Which Should You Take? (2026 Guide)
If you need an English test for study, work, or a visa, you’ve probably hit the same question everyone does: PTE or IELTS? Both are widely accepted. Both test the same four skills. The right choice usually comes down to how you perform under each format — and a few practical differences. Here’s an honest comparison.
The biggest difference: who scores you
This is the one that decides it for most people. PTE Academic is fully computer-based — even your speaking is recorded and scored by a computer. IELTS speaking is a face-to-face conversation with a real examiner.
- If you get nervous talking to a person, or have a strong accent a human might misjudge, many people find PTE easier, because the machine just scores clarity and fluency.
- If you speak more naturally to a human and freeze in front of a microphone, IELTS may suit you better.
Results speed
PTE typically returns results in 2–5 days. IELTS usually takes 3–13 days depending on the format. If you’re racing a visa or admission deadline, PTE’s speed is a real advantage.
Format and feel
- PTE is one ~2-hour computer session, with integrated tasks (one task tests two skills at once — e.g. listen, then summarise in writing). Some find this efficient; others find the multitasking demanding.
- IELTS separates the skills more clearly, and the writing is by hand on paper (or typed on computer-delivered IELTS). If you think better with a pen, that matters.
Scoring scales are different — don’t panic
PTE scores 10–90. IELTS scores band 0–9. They are not the same number, so a “65” in PTE is not a “6.5” band. Here’s a rough, widely-used comparison (always check the exact requirement of your university or visa, as official conversions vary slightly):

Acceptance

- Choose PTE if: you want fast results, you’re comfortable with computers, and you’d rather a machine scored your speaking.
- Choose IELTS if: you prefer a human examiner, you write better by hand, or your institution specifically asks for it.
The honest truth: for most people, the “easier” test is simply the one whose format fits them — and the only way to know that is to try a realistic practice test of each and see where your real score lands, before you pay the exam fee.
