DELE, SIELE or CCSE? Choosing the Right Spanish Exam in 2026 (Before You Pay for the Wrong One)

Every year, people pay for the wrong Spanish exam — and only find out after the fee’s spent and the result’s in hand. In 2026 the stakes are higher, because the rules around Spanish nationality changed, and the exam you choose now decides whether your goal is even possible.

Here’s the honest breakdown of the three exams, and which one your goal actually needs.

DELE — the lifetime diploma

DELE is issued by the Instituto Cervantes and is the only Spanish diploma with lifetime validity. It’s level-based and pass/fail: you register for a specific level (A1–C2), sit it, and pass or fail that level. It’s the exam Spanish universities usually name (commonly B2), and — this is the important part for 2026 — it’s the exam required for Spanish nationality.

SIELE — the fast, flexible placement

SIELE is also backed by the Instituto Cervantes, but it works differently: one adaptive exam, scored 0–1000, mapped to a CEFR level (A1–C1), valid five years. Results come in weeks, not months, and it explicitly recognises Latin American Spanish. It’s excellent for a job application or a general proficiency check. But there’s a catch people miss: SIELE is not accepted for Spanish citizenship. No matter how high your score, it can’t be used in a nationality application.

CCSE — the civics test for nationality

CCSE isn’t a language test at all. It’s 25 questions on Spain’s constitution and society, pass mark 15/25, from an official public pool. For Spanish nationality by residence, you generally need both CCSE and DELE A2 or higher.

The 2026 change that catches people out

Under Royal Decree 1155/2024, DELE A2 or higher is now the legally stated language requirement for Spanish nationality applications, alongside CCSE. Registration for all 2026 DELE sessions opened on 1 December 2025. So if nationality is your goal, two things matter: you need DELE specifically (not SIELE), and you should book early, because sessions and seats fill.

Two honest cautions worth stating plainly:

Nationality is a requirement, not a guarantee. DELE A2 + CCSE is one part of the process. Standard naturalisation needs years of legal residency (shorter for nationals of Ibero-American countries and a few others, many of whom are exempt from DELE entirely), plus other conditions. Confirm your case with the registro civil or a qualified advisor.

A passing DELE B2 is not automatic university admission. It satisfies the language requirement many Spanish universities set, but each university sets its own academic criteria too. DELE is one piece of the application, not the whole picture.
