PTE Academic UKVI for Skilled Worker Visa 2026

PTE Academic UKVI for Skilled Worker Visa 2026: Is 59 Enough?

Your overall PTE score is above 59—but one individual skill is 58. Does that meet the UK Skilled Worker visa English requirement?

For a new Skilled Worker application, the answer is generally no when you use PTE Academic UKVI to demonstrate B2 English.

Pearson currently lists the B2 requirement as 59 or higher in each of the four skills:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Speaking
  • Writing

A higher overall result does not automatically compensate for an individual skill below the required level.

Candidates also need to select the correct PTE test, attend an approved test centre and determine whether they need to take an English test at all.

What Is the Skilled Worker English Requirement in 2026?

New Skilled Worker applicants normally need to demonstrate English at B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The requirement covers:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening

The B2 requirement took effect on 8 January 2026. It generally applies to new Skilled Worker applicants and most people switching to this route from another type of visa.

Different transitional arrangements can apply to people who already held Skilled Worker permission before 8 January 2026.

Always check your circumstances through the official GOV.UK guidance before booking or submitting a test result.

What PTE UKVI Score Is Required?

Pearson currently lists the following PTE Academic UKVI scores for applicants demonstrating B2:

SkillMinimum score
Listening59
Reading59
Speaking59
Writing59

The important words are “in each of the four sections.”

Example: Every Skill Meets the Requirement

A candidate receives:

  • Listening: 62
  • Reading: 61
  • Speaking: 59
  • Writing: 64

Every skill is at least 59. According to Pearson’s published equivalence, the candidate meets the stated PTE component threshold for B2.

Example: One Skill Is Below 59

Another candidate receives:

  • Listening: 68
  • Reading: 65
  • Speaking: 58
  • Writing: 63

Even if the overall score is above 59, Speaking is below the listed component requirement.

Strong Reading or Listening results do not replace a Speaking or Writing result below the required level.

PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI?

For a Skilled Worker visa application requiring a four-skill Secure English Language Test, the relevant Pearson test is PTE Academic UKVI.

Standard PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI have the same:

  • Test content
  • Format
  • Scoring system
  • Question types

The important administrative difference is that PTE Academic UKVI provides a SELT Unique Reference Number, known as the SELT URN.

UK Visas and Immigration uses this number to verify the candidate’s result.

Standard PTE Academic is accepted for many university-admission purposes, but candidates should not assume that it provides the UKVI verification information needed for a work-visa application.

When your purpose is a Skilled Worker visa, select PTE Academic UKVI unless official guidance confirms that you can use another form of English evidence.

Can You Use PTE Home?

PTE Home and PTE Academic UKVI are different tests.

PTE Academic UKVI

  • Assesses all four skills
  • Uses the PTE 10–90 score scale
  • Is designed for routes requiring four-skill evidence
  • Provides the SELT URN required for verification

PTE Home

  • Assesses Speaking and Listening
  • Is used for certain family, settlement and citizenship routes
  • Does not provide the four-skill evidence normally required for a new Skilled Worker application

Do not book PTE Home only because its name relates to UK visas. Your test must match your particular immigration route.

Does Every Applicant Need a PTE Test?

No. A test is only one possible way to prove English.

You may be able to meet the requirement through another accepted form of evidence.

UK School Qualification

Certain English qualifications from a UK school may be accepted when the applicant began studying for them while under 18.

These can include specified GCSE, A-level and Scottish qualifications.

UK Degree

A degree-level qualification taught in English and awarded by a UK institution may provide the necessary evidence.

Overseas Degree Taught in English

If your degree was awarded outside the UK, you may need an Ecctis assessment confirming that it is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher and was taught in English.

A university letter stating that the course was taught in English may not, by itself, replace the required assessment.

Nationality Exemption

Nationals of certain English-speaking countries and territories listed by the UK Government do not need to prove their English ability separately.

Living or studying in an English-speaking country does not automatically create the same exemption.

Professional English Assessment

Doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives and certain other regulated professionals may not need separate evidence if they have already passed an English assessment accepted by their relevant UK professional body.

This depends on the profession and the assessment used. Passing any healthcare English test does not automatically create an exemption.

What If You Held a Skilled Worker Visa Before 8 January 2026?

The date of your previous immigration permission matters.

GOV.UK states that someone who held Skilled Worker permission before 8 January 2026 and is extending or updating that visa remains subject to B1.

The guidance also states that such applicants do not need to prove their English again.

Someone switching from a Health and Care Worker visa may also not need to provide English evidence again.

However, a person switching to Skilled Worker from a different visa normally needs to meet B2.

Do not apply the transitional rule simply because you lived or worked in the UK before January 2026. The relevant questions are:

  • Which visa permission did you hold?
  • When did you receive it?
  • Are you extending, updating or switching?
  • Which route are you switching from?

Where Must You Take PTE Academic UKVI?

PTE Academic UKVI must be taken on a computer at an authorised test centre.

It cannot be taken at home.

UKVI guidance says an accepted SELT must:

  • Appear on the approved test list
  • Be taken at an approved location
  • Normally have been awarded within two years before the application date

Before paying, confirm that the booking clearly states PTE Academic UKVI and that the location is approved.

What Is the SELT URN?

After completing an approved SELT, the candidate receives a unique reference number.

For Pearson tests, this is the SELT URN.

UK Visas and Immigration uses the number to verify the result through Pearson’s online verification system.

Copy the SELT URN carefully into the relevant part of your visa application. GOV.UK warns that an application may be placed at risk if the required reference number is not included.

How Long Is a PTE Academic UKVI Result Valid?

Pearson states that a PTE Academic UKVI result is valid for two years from the test date.

UKVI’s general SELT guidance also states that an approved test result should normally have been awarded during the two years before the application.

This does not mean every existing visa holder must retake the test. Previous-proof and transitional rules can affect whether you need to provide evidence again.

Check:

  1. Whether you need to prove English again
  2. Whether your existing result is still acceptable
  3. Whether the test supplied the required SELT reference number

How Quickly Are Results Released?

Pearson says most candidates receive PTE Academic UKVI results within two business days.

Some results may take up to five business days due to processing or additional review.

Allow enough time for:

  • Test-result processing
  • Possible delays
  • Checking every skill score
  • Entering the SELT URN
  • Reviewing the remaining application documents

Quick result delivery should not be treated as a guarantee that every report will arrive within two days.

How Should You Prepare for 59 in Every Skill?

Aiming only for a strong overall score can hide the component most likely to cause difficulty.

Complete a Four-Skill Diagnostic

Take a timed practice test and record separate estimates for:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Speaking
  • Writing

Your lowest component should become the immediate preparation priority.

Do Not Depend on Compensation

High Listening and Reading results do not automatically rescue Speaking or Writing below 59.

Base your study plan on the individual skill requirement.

Use the Current PTE Format

PTE Academic introduced updated question types and scoring arrangements in August 2025.

Preparation based entirely on old question collections or memorised scripts may not represent the current test accurately.

Use current tasks, original practice material and realistic time limits.

Respond to the Actual Question

Memorised paragraphs can sound fluent while failing to address the task.

Develop flexible methods for organising a response, but make sure that your answer remains relevant to the question.

Diagnose the Cause of Each Mistake

Identify whether an error resulted from:

  • Misunderstanding the task
  • Limited vocabulary
  • Poor time management
  • Grammar problems
  • Low oral fluency
  • Unclear pronunciation
  • Spelling errors
  • An underdeveloped response
  • Loss of concentration during Listening

This produces a more useful study plan than recording only a total score.

A Practical Preparation Cycle

  1. Confirm that PTE Academic UKVI is the test you require.
  2. Record the target score for each skill.
  3. Complete a timed diagnostic test.
  4. Identify your lowest component.
  5. Practise the weakest question types.
  6. Review responses against the relevant scoring criteria.
  7. Complete another four-skill mock test.
  8. Compare your new results with the previous diagnostic.
  9. Book the official test when your performance becomes consistently close to or above your target.

A practice estimate cannot guarantee an official PTE result. It should help you identify weaknesses before test day.
