If you’re a nurse, doctor, or pharmacist planning to register in Australia, the English score goalposts moved on 23 April 2026 — and if you’re preparing right now, you need the exact numbers before you book anything.
Here’s the good news first: the level of English expected didn’t go up. AHPRA realigned the scores across tests to match new concordance research and the Department of Home Affairs migration settings. Same bar — just measured differently across each test.
But “measured differently” hides a few changes that matter a lot depending on which test you’re sitting.
What actually changed (verified)
OET moved from letter grades to numerical scores. For nursing and midwifery registration, the new minimums are Listening 350, Reading 360, Writing 350, Speaking 360 — which lines up with the old Grade B that AHPRA always recognised. If you sat OET on or before 22 April 2026, your old letter grades (B/B/C+/B) still apply.
PTE Academic saw the biggest single shift. The overall dropped from 66 to 63 — but the Speaking minimum jumped from 66 to 76. That’s a 10-point rise on one skill. If you picked PTE because of an easier old Speaking target, that target is gone.
IELTS Academic did not change at all. Overall 7, with 7/7/6.5/7. It’s the one test where your prep needs no adjustment — which is why some nurses now treat it as the most predictable route.
TOEFL iBT had minor moves — total down from 94 to 91, Speaking up slightly. (And you must select “Taking TOEFL for Australia” when booking, or the result won’t count.)
A few rules people miss: you can’t combine scores from two different test providers (no IELTS + PTE), each test is judged on its test date (not your application date), and at-home versions are not accepted — approved test centre only.
The trap that still catches people: registration is not your visa
This is the one we see hurt people most, and the April change makes it worse because everyone’s focused on the registration numbers.
Registration (AHPRA / the Nursing and Midwifery Board) is your licence to work as a nurse in Australia. A visa (the Department of Home Affairs) is your permission to enter and stay. They are two separate systems, with two separate English rules — and clearing one does not clear the other.
It gets sharper: even nurses from exempt English-speaking countries (UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, New Zealand) can be exempt from sitting a test for the visa — but still score zero English points on a skilled-migration application unless they sit an approved test. Competent English might make you eligible; it’s Proficient or Superior English that actually earns the points that win an invitation.
So the honest planning order is: check your registration English requirement and your visa English requirement side by side, before you book a single test. Plan for the higher of the two.
