CELPIP General vs General LS: Choose the Right Test

CELPIP General vs General LS in 2026: Which Test Should You Book?

One missing “LS” can change the test you take, the skills you prepare and whether your result is suitable for your application.

CELPIP offers two different English tests:

  • CELPIP General
  • CELPIP General LS

Their names may appear similar, but they assess different skills and are designed for different purposes.

CELPIP General assesses Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. CELPIP General LS assesses only Listening and Speaking.

Choosing the shorter test simply because it appears easier can become an expensive mistake if your immigration programme requires evidence of all four language abilities.

Before registering, answer one important question:

Which exact CELPIP test does the organisation receiving your result require?

What Is CELPIP General?

CELPIP General is a fully computer-delivered English test covering four language abilities:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

The test is completed in one sitting and takes under three hours. Candidates record their Speaking responses using a computer instead of attending a separate face-to-face interview.

CELPIP General is used for purposes including permanent residence, immigration, professional designation, employment and education, depending on the receiving organisation.

For Canadian immigration programmes such as Express Entry, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada instructs candidates choosing CELPIP to take CELPIP General.

The required result is not identical for every immigration programme. Your target Canadian Language Benchmark level may depend on your chosen route and other application requirements.

What Is CELPIP General LS?

“LS” stands for:

  • Listening
  • Speaking

CELPIP General LS does not assess Reading or Writing.

The test takes approximately one hour and is officially designated for proof of Listening and Speaking ability in Canadian citizenship applications.

This shorter format exists because the Canadian citizenship language requirement focuses on speaking and listening.

However, General LS should not be treated as a shorter replacement for the four-skill CELPIP General test.

If an immigration programme requires results for Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking, a General LS result cannot provide the required four-skill evidence.

Which CELPIP Test Is Required for Express Entry?

Candidates using CELPIP for Express Entry must take CELPIP General.

IRCC currently lists these approved English-test options for Express Entry:

  • CELPIP General
  • IELTS General Training
  • PTE Core

CELPIP General LS is not listed as an Express Entry test because it does not provide Reading and Writing results.

Express Entry programmes use results across all four abilities to determine the candidate’s Canadian Language Benchmark levels and, where applicable, Comprehensive Ranking System points.

Do not book General LS for Express Entry, even if Listening or Speaking is the only skill you currently want to improve.

Which CELPIP Test Is Suitable for Canadian Citizenship?

CELPIP General LS is specifically designed for Canadian citizenship language evidence.

Current Canadian citizenship guidance states that applicants who are 18 to 54 years old when they sign their application generally need to provide evidence of Listening and Speaking ability at CLB 4 or higher, unless an exemption or waiver applies.

For results under the current CELPIP scale, the government lists a required score of 4 or higher in Listening and Speaking.

However, General LS is not the only CELPIP result that may be accepted.

If you previously completed CELPIP General for permanent residence and obtained the required Listening and Speaking results, you may be able to submit that result with your citizenship application.

IRCC says qualifying previous language-test results may be submitted for citizenship even if they have expired.

Therefore, check whether you already possess acceptable language evidence before paying for another test.

Before Booking General LS, Ask:

  1. Am I required to provide language evidence?
  2. Do I already have an acceptable CELPIP General result?
  3. Are my Listening and Speaking scores high enough?
  4. Do I have another accepted form of language evidence?
  5. Does an exemption or waiver apply to my situation?

Always make the final decision using current IRCC guidance.

Which CELPIP Test Is Accepted for Australian Visas?

Australia added CELPIP General to its approved English-test options for visa purposes from 7 August 2025.

The approved version assesses all four skills. CELPIP General LS is not listed as the Australian visa test.

Australia does not apply one universal CELPIP score to every visa route.

The required English evidence can depend on:

  • Your visa subclass
  • The English level required
  • Your test date
  • Minimum overall or component scores
  • The permitted validity period
  • Any exemption applying to your application

The Australian Department of Home Affairs also says that an approved English test must be taken at a secure testing centre. Completely online or at-home English tests are not accepted for Australian visa purposes.

Open the official page for your intended visa subclass and check its latest requirements before registering.

A CELPIP score required for one visa should not automatically be treated as the requirement for another visa.

Can CELPIP General Be Used for Canadian Citizenship?

Yes, when the result satisfies the current citizenship language-evidence requirements.

The distinction is:

  • CELPIP General LS is specifically intended for citizenship applications.
  • A qualifying CELPIP General result can also provide the necessary Listening and Speaking evidence.

Someone who already completed CELPIP General for permanent residence may not need to sit General LS.

Check the official IRCC guidance before booking another test.

Why Can Choosing the Wrong Test Cause Problems?

It May Not Assess Every Required Skill

An immigration programme requiring four individual skill results cannot evaluate your complete language profile from a two-skill test.

You May Need to Pay Again

A General LS result cannot later be converted into a CELPIP General result. If you selected the wrong version, you may need to register and prepare again.

Your Application Could Be Delayed

Submitting an unsuitable test may lead to additional document requests, a returned application or another negative outcome, depending on the programme and circumstances.

The Correct Test Can Still Have Different Score Requirements

Selecting CELPIP General is only the first step. You must also achieve the results required by your particular immigration or visa route.

“CELPIP is accepted” does not mean that every CELPIP version and every CELPIP score is accepted for every purpose.

Seven Checks Before Booking CELPIP

1. Identify Your Exact Application Route

Do not record only “Canada immigration” or “Australia visa.”

Identify the complete programme, such as:

  • Express Entry
  • Canadian citizenship
  • Atlantic Immigration Program
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit
  • Australian Student visa
  • Australian Skills in Demand visa
  • A professional registration process

2. Check the Receiving Authority’s Website

Use IRCC, the Australian Department of Home Affairs or the organisation receiving your result as your primary source.

A social-media comment about another applicant’s experience is not an official requirement.

3. Confirm the Complete Test Name

Look for the exact wording:

  • CELPIP General
  • CELPIP General LS

Do not assume that seeing the word “CELPIP” alone confirms which version you need.

4. Check the Required Skills

Determine whether the application requires:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

If it requires results for all four abilities, General LS will not be sufficient.

5. Confirm the Minimum Results

Check whether the requirement applies:

  • To every component
  • To an overall score
  • To both overall and component scores
  • Through a CLB level
  • Through a visa-specific English category

6. Check Result Validity

The acceptable age of a result depends on how it is being used.

For example, a qualifying expired result may be accepted as Canadian citizenship evidence, while permanent-residence and Australian visa routes can apply different validity rules.

7. Save the Official Requirement

Keep a copy, screenshot or link showing the requirement you followed.

Rules can change between preparation, registration and application submission.

Preparing for CELPIP General

CELPIP General preparation should cover all four skills.

A practical preparation cycle is:

  1. Complete a four-skill diagnostic test.
  2. Record your estimated result for each component.
  3. Compare the results with your application target.
  4. Identify your weakest task types.
  5. Practise those tasks under realistic timing.
  6. Review why each mistake occurred.
  7. Complete another timed test and compare your performance.

Do not ignore a weak component because your overall English feels strong. Many immigration routes apply minimum requirements to each language ability.

Preparing for CELPIP General LS

General LS candidates can concentrate on Listening and Speaking.

For Listening, practise:

  • Identifying the speaker’s purpose
  • Following changes in opinion
  • Recognising important details
  • Understanding implied meaning
  • Taking useful notes without missing new information

For Speaking, practise:

  • Answering the exact task
  • Organising ideas quickly
  • Supporting an opinion
  • Describing details clearly
  • Speaking at a controlled pace
  • Completing responses within the time limit

The shorter test is not automatically easy. Both assessed skills still need to meet the required citizenship standard.
