Why Your IELTS Writing Is Stuck at 6.5 (and How to Reach 7)

If you’ve taken IELTS more than once and your writing keeps landing at 6 or 6.5, you are not alone — and it is probably not your English that’s holding you back.

Most people stuck at this band are making the same handful of small, fixable mistakes. The examiner isn’t failing you for big errors; they’re capping you for patterns. Here are the four most common ones, and how to fix each.

1. You answer the topic, but not the question

IELTS Task 2 questions have a specific instruction — discuss both views, to what extent do you agree, what are the causes and solutions. Many candidates write everything they know about the topic but never directly answer the exact question. Band 7 demands a clear position that addresses every part of the task. Before you write, underline what the question actually asks, and make sure each paragraph serves it.

2. Your essay is a list of ideas, not a developed argument

Band 6 essays often have many ideas, each mentioned once. Band 7 essays take fewer ideas and develop them — claim, explanation, example, consequence. Depth beats breadth. Two well-developed points score higher than five shallow ones.

3. You’re using “big” words to impress — and they’re hurting you

A common myth is that rare, advanced vocabulary raises your band. In reality, misused “impressive” words lower it, because the examiner marks accuracy and natural use, not difficulty. Use precise, correct words you control well. A correctly used common word beats a wrongly used rare one every time.

4. You don’t know your real band until results day — so you can’t fix anything

This is the big one. Most people practise blind: they write essay after essay with no idea what band it would score, then get a shock on results day. Without honest feedback, you can’t tell which of the habits above is costing you. You repeat the same mistakes and the same 6.5.
